| It
was on Ascension Day,
forty years ago, that Woolston finally had an Anglican Church of its
own, when the Church of the Ascension was consecrated by the then
Bishop of Liverpool, Rt. Revd. Stuart Blanch. Since then the
church has gone from being a team to a group church, had six incumbents
and a new roof, seen hundreds of baptisms, weddings and funerals take
place and amassed all kinds of memories of people and events. So 2010
is a special year for the Church and for the community it
is here to serve. Members of the church have shared in an Indian meal at our local restaurant, the Sindh, and a BBQ done by the Crazy Hog Catering Company. Together with members of the community we have been entertained at three wonderful concerts by The Warrington Male Voice Choir, Warrington Brass and by the children of our local schools in an evening of Youth Voices. The high spot of the year so far had to be the Festival of Flowers - aptly titled "God in the Community" - held in May around the time of our patronal festval on Ascension Day. The church was transformed with a riot of colour from flower displays produced by our very talented flower arrangers and with displays of artwork from the very clever children of Junior Church, The Warren Playgroup, Epping Drive and Hall Road Primary Schools and Woolston Community High School. Even the local Scouts put in a exhibit, but we didn't find out who it was who surrendered his boots for the occasion! In the three days that the church was open to the public over 200 people came through the doors and all were thrilled by what they saw. Click here to see some of the beautiful displays. On Ascension Day itself, a service of Holy Communion was held. Sadly Bishop James was indisposed and was unable to be present; however vicar Barry made an admirable stand-in with a meaningful sermon to set us thinking. The evening ended with a lavish Ascension buffet in the church hall and a piece of celebration cake. There are more things in the pipeline, so keep watching this space for details. In the meantime, enjoy the show... |
